About Us

The Bharatanatyam Group of Christchurch

The Bharatanatyam Group of Christchurch is a dance school that was founded by myself, Anuradha Ambalavanar in 2010.

Over the years, this dance school has nurtured countless students in Bharatanatyam dancing and given many individuals the opportunity to showcase the art of Bharatanatyam at countless events.

We have performed at events for the Canterbury Tamil Society, Kerala Societies, Fiji Indian Societies, Indian Social & Cultural Club and other public functions like NZ Day and Colours of India. Furthermore, my students have also taken part in the Body Festivals ‘Satvika’ (With Vivek Kinra and Mudra Dance Company in 2012), ‘Nadananjali’ (2013) and ‘Light of Bharatam’ (2014).

My Mission

My aim at the Bharatanatyam Group of Christchurch is to inspire individuals through the classical arts of Bharatanatyam dance and Carnatic music, celebrating cultural heritage while providing a supportive space for personal and artistic growth. I believe fostering a supportive and enriching environment will help students thrive. Therefore, I tailor lessons to individual needs, ensuring that each student develops skills at their own pace while enjoying their journey.

Core Values

Respect

Building a supportive environment where students respect their teachers (guru), fellow dancers, the art form and most importantly, themselves.

Preserving Tradition

Honouring the history, culture, and spiritual origins of Bharatanatyam and Carnatic Music, I will help students appreciate this while preserving its authenticity and classical integrity.

Expression and Storytelling

Encouraging dancers to connect emotionally and communicate stories, feelings, and meaning through movement, song and rhythm.

Discipline

Bharatanatyam and Carnatic Music are rooted in rigorous training, and consistency and therefore require discipline to build strength, focus, and dedication in dancers. I balance discipline with empathy so that students can learn in a constructive environment.

Patience and Growth

Mastery in the classical art forms takes time and patience. Students will build to technical precision and artistic refinement as singers, dancers and individuals. I provide a non-judgmental environment to encourage dancers to learn at their own pace so that they themselves can appreciate this journey.

Building Inclusivity and Community

Fostering a supportive environment where students of all backgrounds can find commonality through their passion for Bharatanatyam and Carnatic Music to build a vibrant and collaborative community.
